Mission Control expects to lose communications with Atlantis about eight minutes from now due to the build up of plasma around the shuttle and the specific antennas being used.
The shuttle is flying at Mach 25 with its nose elevated 40 degrees, wings level, at an altitude of 399,000 feet over the southern Pacific Ocean. Touchdown remains set for 11:39 a.m. EDT in the Mojave Desert. The shuttle is streaking 350,000 feet over the Pacific at a speed of 16,800 mph now.
