Thanks for your interest in ANSMET. As you can probably guess, I get a lot of inquiries, ranging from simple curiosity to active academic interest. The first step in volunteering to join us in the field is simply a letter (on paper, please) stating your interest in the program. Note: I did say paper, didn't I? Your letter will go into a big file that I look through each year as I make my field party decisions. The letter should tell me several things. First, make sure you tell me why you want to go, concentrating on the benefits you foresee to your academic achievements (how would it relate to your studies?). I give high priority to those involved in active research with Antarctic meteorites as university researchers or graduate students. Although some level of fitness and outdoor experience is helpful, and sheer enthusiasm is a wonderful thing, I place a much higher value on academic involvement with meteorites or other planetary materials. Make sure you also tell me when you are available, paying particular attention to any academic or job commitments you may have. Just saying "I could go anytime" is not as useful as saying "I will finish my degree in spring of 2015 and would love to go for the 2015-2016 season". I do not need a CV or a 20 of your most famous publications. Also, be patient. I have a long list of volunteers, and only a few new people are likely to be invited each year. Virtually everyone who volunteers will have to wait several years for an opportunity, so write new letters every year or so to increase your chances. If possible, introduce yourself to me at scientific meetings. Typically I go to the Lunar and Planetary Science conference, and sometimes one other meeting (GSA or Meteoritical Society). Last thing- you've probably already seen it, but just in case, let me direct you to the ANSMET web site, athttp://geology.cwru.edu/~ansmet/There's more detailed information at that site for your use. Oh, and since you mentioned Timur K. might be interested feel free to pass this on to him.
