North Korea Could Use New Missile Launch Site in 2011, Expert SaysWednesday, June 22, 2011North Korea in 2011 might conduct a trial launch of an extended-range missile from its recently built launch installation, which is seen as more advanced than the nation's first site, one analyst told the Yonhap News Agency on Tuesday (see GSN, June 8 ).RAND Corp. defense expert Bruce Bennett said the North's launch site at Dongchang-ri "is pretty close to being ready to use."South Korea and the United States have been tracking progress at the west-coast installation for more than two years. Satellite photographs taken in early 2011 indicate that a launch tower was nearly fully built."A trial launch at the Dongchang-ri site? I think that's possible that they could do it this year," Bennett said. The defense analyst said he had no concrete proof that Pyongyang is readying for a missile test and that one goal of the new launch site would be to place a satellite into near-Earth space."They have to do a number of tests to prove that they could launch a satellite. But in the process, a missile that can reach the United States could be tested," Bennett said.Retiring U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates in January said he believed North Korea required no more than half a decade to field a missile that could strike the continental United States. The aspiring nuclear power in 2006 test-fired a long-range Taepodong 2 missile that broke apart less than a minute after takeoff. A more successful test took place in 2009 when the missile traveled nearly 2,000 miles before splashing down in the Pacific Ocean (Yonhap News Agency/Korea Herald, June 21).
North Korea prepares to test long range missile: intelligence groupNorth Korea is on the threshold of testing an intercontinental ballistic missile, one that can travel more than 5,000 kilometers, according to a global defense intelligence group.Missile tests and actual acts of aggression are part of the playbook for North Korea, but the exact nature of their missile arsenal and organisation has been shrouded in secrecy and confusion. Now the defence intellligence group IHS Janes says fresh information, combined with satellite images, allows for a clearer picture of the Korean People’s Army’s ballistic missile force.
