Celestron SkyScout Personal Planetarium
Here is the workaround to the GPS issue -
1. Turn on the device. Don't wait for the inevitable "couldn not get GPS fix message".
2. Click on "Menu" button -> Select Enter Time/Location Manually
3. Go to Google and search for "UTC Time". Google will provide the UTC time applicable to you. Enter this time into SkyScout. Leave "Offset" at +0.
4. Make sure that you are entering the date provided by Google query you made in the above step. The date can be off by one day from your local date depending upon what time zone you are located in. Click "End"
5. Now Google for "latitude longitude <your town>". Example: "latitude longitude San Mateo". Google will provide you the co-ordinates. Enter them. Click "End".
6. At this point, you are done. However, it is often easy to go wrong in step (3) above. Just to make sure, click on the "GPS" button.
This will show you the latitude/longitude/UTC time as currently set. Verify that these values are OK.
Remember: Every time you shut down the device, you need to enter the UTC time value again. The latitude/longitude values does not change once stored, but the UTC time value gets wiped out once the device is powered down. So, before you go out of the house make sure that the device is set up.
